This comment applies to most guns used during the Indian wars. With black gunpowder the bullets traveled fairly slowly - less than the speed of sound. When the gun was fired the smoke was immedialtely visible but the bullet arrive a short time later. The Sharps 1874 Buffalo Gun chambered in 45-70 was the weapon the hunters called "Old Reliable" and included a double trigger or "set" trigger which made it effective at ranges over 1000 yards. This was the finest sniper weapon of its day and killed more Bison then all other rifles combined.
Guns are relatively modern invention, so were probably NOT used by "ancient" Indians. "Ancient" is a relative term unless placed in context. Also you need to specify what do you mean "ancient Indians" as in natives or the country India, or American native Indians?
