Depends which headgear you are talking about. A headcollar is what you use to lead them and turnout etc. A bridle is what you ride with and you can get many different types.

A headcollar can also be known as a halter.

There a 4 main types of headgear for Horse's.

1. Bridle. This is usually made of leather (Although it can be synthetic). Its main pointer is that is it the only piece of headgear that has reins.

2. In hand bridle. These are ALWAYS leather. Th only difference between bridle and an in hand bridle is an in hand bridle has a leadrope.

3. Headcollar. This a synthetic (Or leather) piece of headgear that is usually used on the ground. It does not have a bit.

4. Halter. A halter is like a rope headcollar.

This can depend on what type of hat you are referring to. If you mean the safety 'hat' that is called a helmet or skull cap. If you mean the hat high level dressage riders where that's a top hat, and if you mean the rounded hat that saddleseat riders wear, that's called a derby (pronounced Darby). And of course western riders wear cowboy hats.

Lead as in lead line/Lead rope? If so, the horse should be wearing a properly sized cotton or leather halter.
