New Zealanders eat the same sort of diet (basically) as any other developed country. There are a whole range of fresh foods available: vegetables, fruits, fish and meat, either locally grown or imported. Fast foods are popular as more people must work to make ends meet, so we have McD, Burger King, Burger Fuel, Hell's Pizza, Pizza Hut, Wendy's and many more, including very popular Indian, Chinese and other ethnic food outlets. Sushi has become extremely popular lately.

Traditionally, and until comparatively recently, we served a roast dinner for Sunday lunch every week but changing times and financial restrictions has meant that few people these days have the big beef, lamb or pork roast which used to be popular. However, this has opened the way for many roast meat takeaways shops where you have your choice of the these meats or chicken, served with roast potato, pumpkin, kumara and sometimes a pea & carrot mix. Slightly healthier than the fat-laden burgers. The meals are available in small. medium and large.

The Maori have, in addition to all the above, their own traditional way of cooking, a hangi, or earth oven. Stones are heated in a fire pit, then scooped out and replaced with well-wrapped foods, often in baskets. Earth is then piled on top and water sprinkled on to create the steam which cooks the food. Traditionally there will be pork, chicken and sometimes beef, with a mixture of root vegetables. The flavour and texture of hangi food is (when done properly) superb. Because Maori tradition of living off the land and sea is still strong, seafood (kaimoana) figures largely in Maori homes. There is usually someone who can go out and gather mussels or pipi, catch a few fish and bring them back for a delicious feed.

New Zealanders also eat more ice cream per capita than any other culture.

The New Zealand diet is influenced mostly by British and Maori culture but now cuisines from all over the world are represented in the New Zealand diet. Many meals include lamb, pork, chicken or beef as well as many types of seafood and shellfish: many varieties of sea fish, salmon, crayfish, oysters, paua (abalone), mussels, scallops, pipi and tuatua (New Zealand shellfish). Manuka honey is a distinctive type of honey unique to NewZealand. New Zealand has a large fruit growing industry that provides apples, pears, peaches, plums, berries, kiwifruit, grapes, and many other types of fruit for both export and domestic consumption. Many types of vegetables are also grown and consumed in New Zealand.

For Maori, traditional foods are still very important and these include: kumara (sweet potato), Kaimoana (fish and seafood), Titi (mutton bird), Tuna (eels), Puha (sow thistle) Kina (sea urchin roe), Kaanga pirau (fermented corn), Waatakirihi (watercress). Wild foods such as deer and pigs are considered important delicacies.

For special occasions, Maori commonly use Hāngi -- a traditional Māori method of steaming baskets of food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven.

Dairying is a major industry and New Zealanders consume a lot of dairy products such as milk, cheese, and butter, and it is said that New Zealanders have the highest consumption of ice cream in the world. A popular dessert in New Zealand is a Pavlova, a meringue named after Russian Ballet dancer Anna Pavlova.

Dinner (evening meal) is the main meal of the day for New Zealanders. Barbecues are common in the summer months. For takeout, fish and chips is a popular dish but virtually all well-known takeaway brands have franchises in New Zealand. Christmas dinner is usually a ham, turkey or chicken.
