20w-40 sae.. just looked at my owners manual..or on a colder days use 10w30 sae. the manual also says that.

the answer is on the inside of the cover plate on the left side (sitting on the bike)cover the triangular cover. I have a 1982 Yamaha xj750j and it says sae 20w/40(above 5 c)sae 10w/30 (below 15c)

its 80w 90 gear oil. i use synthetic and have had no problems on my 94 timberwolf
