The rock formations known as Brimham Rocks are composed of a type of sandstone known in the UK as Millstone Grit. They were originally deposited around 320 million years ago. The present day shape of the rocks is due to mechanical and freeze thaw weathering that occurred during the Devensian glaciation which commenced around 110,000 years ago and and ended approximately 10,000 years ago. It's more accurate to ask what types of rock hold caves, given that a cave is a lack of rock, as i think that's what you mean! Most caves form in limestone, so the floor, walls and roof are of limestone, as are most of the boulders on the floor.
