I need Dexron III in my Subaru Forester, but I don't need any right now, thanks. Your owner's manual will tell you what to use in yours.

Unfortunately, you need to pour the transmission fluid into the dipstick hole. Found in Subaru owners manual
To check the brake fluid level on a 99 Subaru Forester, you need to open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. This is located on the master cylinder. There will either be a dipstick in the reservoir, or a line embossed on the side that says 'full.' If needed, add DOT 3 brake fluid.
Assuming that your 2001 is the same as my 2000, the pump is atached at the bottom of the fluid reservoir. It does not need to be primed. --Ken
EVERY 50,000 KMS.
There is no mileage where one "has" to change the transmission fluid or filter. It is your car and you can do with it as you wish. The warranty manual for my 2000 Forester recommends changing the fluid every 15,000 miles when used under severe conditions. I recommend changing ATF yearly and you shouldn't need to change the filter unless it has been damaged. It is as easy as changing the engine oil, so why not do a little preventive maintenance? --Ken
One reasons a Subaru Forester may overheat is because the radiator may need replaced. Another reason could be the thermostat.
Subaru fluid only from dealer. Cost is about $8.00 / qt and you need 4.5 for drain and refill or 14-16 to completely change it.
You'll need to remove the driveshafts, even if it has a manual transmission. The transfer case is permanently engaged, and cannot be placed into neutral.
Like most cars: Hot, having driven for at least a few miles; level surface, idling in Park. To be honest I don't recall right now but Subaru may have level marks on the dipstick for both cold and hot, but you still need to have the engine idling when you check it.
It is important to keep the right types of fluids in a car, to help it run smoothly. A 1992 Subaru Legacy Wagon DEXRON III for automatic transmission and for manual transmission: GL5 75W90 gear oil.
New spark plugs and possibly plug wires.
