Only Sterile or Distilled water should be used in CPAP machine.

It is important not to use tap water or drinking water as these will leave a mineral residue in the machine and will seriously decrease the lifespan of your CPAP unit.

Sodium Chloride (AKA Normal Saline or 0.9% NS) should not be used either. This contains "salt" which could cause functional issues as well.

If you have a residue in your unit try using a vinegar rinse to clean the water chamber.

That depends on how the water was purified. The thing you want to avoid is dissolved minerals, which can build up in the humidifier of the CPAP. Distilled water is recommended because dissolved minerals cannot cross the distillation process. Other forms of "purification" such as filtering or semi-permeable membranes can leave minerals dissolved in the water.

With that said, I bought distilled water from a drugstore in Japan that was also labeled (in English) "Purified water".

Any type of Sterile water purchased from a Drug Store or Medical Supply dealer is sufficient. You may also use distilled water which can be purchased from most groceries, etc.

Can distilled water with added electrolytes be used in a CPAP machine?

You don't breathe distilled watter in a CPAP machine, but the air brought into the machine is passed through distilled water before it is sent to your mask. This humidifies the air and prevents your mouth and/or nose from drying out while you use the machine. If distilled water is not available, you can use plain tap water, but: The reservoir in the machine will have to be cleaned more often and more thoroughlyif your tap water is heavily chlorinated, you may find the smell of it unpleasant

Can you put camphor in the water in your husbands Cpap machine?

Nothing should be added to the water in the humidifier. The only thing that should be put here is STERILE or DISTILLED Water. Adding anything else can cause adverse affects to the humidifier rendering it inoperable. Certain additives can also allow the growth of bacteria which would then be breathed into the lungs. There are aromatherapy options that can be used with CPAP machines by using a third party applicator system to allow the use of aromatherapy while under CPAP therapy. These can be obtained through some CPAP suppliers.

Can you use normal saline in a cpap?

Normal Saline should not be used in the humidifier of your CPAP machine. Only distilled water should be used. The salt in the saline water could build up in the water chamber and introduce bacteria in the air your breathe. If you have further questions regarding this, you should speak with your physician or respiratory therapist.

How to clean your CPAP machine?

Your CPAP machine should be cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Take a cloth, dampen it with small amount of water (only water). Wipe down all of the external surfaces. If you have a humidifier attached to your machine, take out the water chamber and wipe down the inside of the machine. Empty the water chamber and thoroughly clean the surfaces on the inside with mild detergent, rinse thoroughly and air dry. Your tubing can be cleaned using a tube cleaning kit which can be purchased from many CPAP suppliers. However, minimally it is recommended to replace it every three months. Your mask should be taken apart and cleaned with mild detergent every 1-2 weeks, then rinse and let air dry. Mask cleaning wipes can be purchased from CPAP suppliers as well. These are used daily to wipe down the mask pillows that cushion the face to remove the skin oils that have collected throughout the night. Your mask cushions should be replaced every 1-3 months depending on your type of mask and the insurance guidelines. The frames will usually need to be replaced every 6 mos to a year. Most insurances will cover a new mask every 6 mos.
