Theodore Roosevelt was the first to use "White House" on his official stationery.
The name was never give any official status by Congress. People called it by that name at least since it was painted white after it was repaired from being burned by the British.

∙ 15y agoThe White House has not always been white. In the War of 1812, it was set of fire, and it burned. I believe it was the French who did this. Although it didn't get completely destroyed, the exterior of the building was badly burned, and, therefore, the building was discolored. So, they had it painted white, which is how we get the name for the White House.

∙ 8y agoPrior to the presidency of Theodore (Teddy ) Roosevelt, US presidents lived in the Executive Mansion. When Teddy Roosevelt became US president, he renamed the executive mansion to White House.
