The mezuzah is a small rectangular container which holds a parchment inscribed with the portion from Scriptures called the Shema: "Hear, O Israel..." (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21) which reminds Jews that we are answerable to God, that we are to love Him and keep His commandments, and to be diligent to teach our children His ways. As we come into the home, we have this reminder before us (usually on the right-hand side as one enters). Etymologically, the word "mezuzot" means the doorposts, but the term has come to be used for the container with the parchment which is affixed to the doorpost.

The mezzuzah is a small box fixed on the doorpost of a house or interior room (excluding bathrooms) with a tiny scroll of scripture on it. This is done to fullfill the commandment in Deuteronomy 11:20.
In the Torah, God commands the Jewish people to hang mezuzot on their doorposts. Two Torah portions, Shema and Vehaya, include the verse: "And you shall inscribe these words upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates."

The Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) begins with "Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One." The Shema reminds us that God is always present in our lives, and that we should keep God's words constantly in our minds and in our hearts. The Shema tells us that one way to do this is by writing them on the doorposts of our house. Vehaya (Deuteronomy 11:13-21) assures us of God's compensation if we fulfill his commandments (mitzvot).

It is a Torah commandment to hang mezuzot on our doorposts. Mezuzot, in turn, remind of God's presence and of our duty to fulfill God's commandments.
Jewish homes all over the world have a little box on the right side of the door frame. This box is called a Mezuzah. The source for this practice is in The Bible book of Deuteronomy chapters 6 and 11: "Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates." According to Jewish tradition, this is a commandment to affix a box or tube containing a small scroll with verses from the Bible. This is so that we will remember God and his commandments every time that we enter or leave our homes. In this way we have a constant reminder that we are obligated to serve God. There is also a tradition that God protects the home of one who properly fulfills the commandment of affixing Mezuzahs.

"Mezuzahs" is commonly used as the plural for "mezuzah" although the correct way of saying the plural for Mezuzah is Mezuzot.

The Mezuzah is a small scroll with Biblical scripture that is enclosed in a case and mounted the door post of Jewish homes. Its' origin is from the bible in Deuteronomy where it states "and you shall write [these words] on the doorposts of your homes.

When Jews packed for the Holocaust they took of the Mezuzah of the door frame and into there pokets/suitcases to take with them to the camps.

The mezuzah isn't 'used'.

It's a small container that holds a rolled parchment on which are written a few biblical paragraphs. Jews mount it on the doorframes of their homes and shops to fulfill the commandment:

"These words that I command you today . . . . . you shall write them

on the doorposts of your homes, and on your gates (Deuteronomy ch.6)."

A mezuzah mounted on the doorpost designates the home as Jewish. The mezuzah is also a symbol of God's watchful care over the home. Some see the mezuzah as a constant reminder of our duty to follow God's directives, and they touch it on the way in and out of the house.

It's a little box-like thing that is attached to the doorway on the left as you walk in to a Jewish household. Inside there are Torah-verses written on parchment. It is customary to kiss your hand and touch it or just touch it when you enter the house.

What does a Jewish home have in it?

Jewish homes have the same things normal homes have in them. Dens, dining rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. The only difference would be mezuzahs (small cases with the "Hear, O' Israel" prayer scrolls rolled up inside them that you nail to the thresh hold of every doorway). That's all I can really think of.
