Well, there were many. The most famous one is of course Rome, which was the capital until the fourth century, then for the whole fourth century Milan was the new capital, followed by Ravenna in 402 AD, and so on.

∙ 9y agoIn the late 280s the emperor Diocletian designated Milan (in northern Italy) as the imperial capital in the western part of the Roman Empire and Nicomedia (in north-western Turkey) as the imperial capital in the eastern part. The emperor Constantine redeveloped the city of Byzantium, designated it as his imperial capital, renamed it Constantinople (City of Constantine) and inaugurated it in 330. This city was just 60 miles east of Nicomedia, which ceased to be an imperial capital.

∙ 10y agoThe emperor Diocletian established Nicomedia (in north-western Turkey) as the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and Milan as the imperial capital of the western part of the Roman Empire. However, he did not divide the empire into an eastern and a western part. he created four main administrative divisions called praetorian prefectures. Two of them were in the west and two were in the east. He also designated two more cites as imperial capitals: Augusta Trevorum (triers, in south-western Germany) was the capital of the praetorian prefecture of Galliae (Gaul, Britannia and Hispania; Sirmium (in Serbia) was the capital of the praetorian prefecture of Illyricum (most of south-eastern Europe). Nicomedia and Milan were also the capitals of the praetorian prefectures of Oriens (the East) and Italia et Africa respectively.
The emperor Constantine I redeveloped Byzantium, renamed it Constantinople (City of Constantine) and designated it as a new imperial capital in 330.
