There were many historical events within the 30 year period in the life of Forrest Gump. The advent of TV, Elvis Presley and rock and roll, civil rights and civil unrest in the 1960's. The war in Vietnam, politics and several presidents, space flight, AIDS, the birth of personal computers such as Apple. The movie Forrest Gump has become an American icon with such phrases as 'life is like a box of chocolates', 'run Forrest run', 'stupid is as stupid does', and my favorite, 'sometimes there just aren't enough rocks'.

There were many true historical events within the Gump movie. From bellbottom pants and the war in Vietnam to the dawn of the information age with Apple Computer and AIDS in the 1980's. Within the span of a couple of hours we lived through 30 years of American history, at least 4 US presidents, the Eisenhower 50's to Reganomics, the death of JFK and Bobby Kennedy to the death of John Lennon in 1980. Civil unrest, the disco era, the fitness era that ushered in Nike running shoes where only Keds and Converse had been before. Forrest Gump was not only the story of Gump but is the story of America in the last half of the 20th century. The Apollo moon landing which would eventually give way to the 'moon hoax', Forrest Gump shows America's growing pains, the good, bad and sometimes ugly of a free and democratic people.

We will never know since the microphone was unplugged at just the time when Gump was expressing his views on the war in Vietnam. All we get to hear is "that's all I have to say about that".
