A little more info:
On December 7 1917 the united states declared war on Austria-Hungary. Wilson got involved because of the submarine attacks the Germans used on merchants ships that also led to the sinking of Lusutania in 1915. President Wilson went before congress on February 3 to inform congress that the cut the diplomatic ties with Germany. By the summer of 1918 about half a million Americans saw front-line service.
The US had been trading with almost all of the countries involved in World War I, but after 1914 began to send increased amounts of material and aid, especially to the British and French. But Woodrow Wilson had campaigned for reelection in 1916 and wanted to keep the US out of the war directly. However, Germany sought to avoid the resupply of its enemies, and its actions soon had the opposite of the intended effect.
The US entered the war in 1917 for a variety of reasons. Here are some summaries of explanations given by WikiAnswers Contributors.
Submarine Warfare and the Lusitania:
Economics:
Some say the "bankers" were involved.
Politics
Ideology
Zimmerman Telegram:
Other points influenced entrance to the war, but the Zimmerman Telegram (sometimes called the "Zimmerman note" or "Zimmerman telegraph") finally pushed the US to war. The Zimmerman Telegram was sent from the German foreign secretary to the German Ambassador to Mexico. It stated the following:
The telegraph was intercepted by British Intelligence and transmitted to the American government by the Brits. This infuriated Americans. It was the same sort of alliance that plunged Europe into war.

Problem regarding the Lusitania as a reason (cause) for American entry:
Twenty-two months plus passed between the sinking of the Lusitania in May 1915 and U.S. entry into World War 1 in April 1917. In view of this it is very hard to see the Lusitania as a cause of American entry. It no doubt did much to turn American public opinion against Germany, but that's a different matter. It really seems that the idea that the Lusitania was a cause or the #1 reason is a myth.

Before entering the war, the US was declaring itself neutral during the fighting and serving only as a goods provider for both sides but with a clear bias for Triple Entente (France Britain Russia Serbia-allies) as opposed to triple alliance (Germany Ottoman Empire Italy-central powers).

Reluctant to enter the European fighting, the US shipped goods to Britain, France, and a lesser extent to Russia. It was not until 1917, three years after the war began, that President Wilson (who campaigned on isolationism) decided to encourage US involvement. The most immediate causes were the use of unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany and the Zimmerman Telegram which exposed a plot to recruit Mexico as a German ally. When the turmoil in Russia threatened to increase German forces on the western front, Wilson pushed the US Congress to declare war.

The main sparks of the United States involvement in World War 1 was the assasination of the Archduke and the sinking of the Lusitania.
America's role in World War 1 was that of a peace maker. America maintained a bystander attitude for a large part of the war and only entered to end it and instigate the peace process.
The United States entered World War 1 on April 6, 1917. It remained in the war until its end on November 11, 1918, about a year and a half later
