By most accounts, he had long been interested in politics, but had not necessarily planned to make it a career. He got a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1983 and a Law Degree in 1991, but gradually came to believe he could make more of a difference by entering politics than he felt he was making as an attorney and a professor. He first ran for office in Chicago in 1996 and was elected to the Illinois State Senate.
