Batman did A LOT of things throughout the whole movie . . His main mission throughout 'The Dark Knight' was to stop The Joker from killing people , and restore peace and order to Gotham City . If you want to see for yourself what Batman was doing in the movie , then you should go watch it .
In the first Batman, the Joker (Jack Nicholson) plunges thousands of feet to his death.
In the last scene, Batman (Michael Keaton) and the Joker are having a fistfight at the very top of one of Gotham's tallest buildings. As Batman advances on him, the Joker keeps stepping backwards. He puts on a pair of glasses and says, "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would you?" but Batman punches him really hard anyway. The Joker tumbles backwards over the ledge.
But it's not over yet. As Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) and Batman peer over the ledge after him, the Joker reaches up, grabs them, and pulls them over the ledge with him: it was a trick. Batman and Vicki Vale hang onto the ledge for awhile, while the Joker taunts them. After awhile, the Joker's minions come by in a helicopter to rescue him. They throw down a rope ladder so he can climb up into the helicopter.
But Batman uses one of his Bat-gadgets to tie the Joker's ankle to a big old gargoyle. The Joker's men try to fly away, with the Joker hanging onto the ladder, but they can't because he's tied to this huge, incredibly heavy gargoyle.
After a few moments, the gargoyle breaks loose from the building, and now the Joker is hanging from the helicopter ladder, with a huge, heavy gargoyle attached to his feet, stretching his body out like he's on that torture device, the rack.
Finally, the Joker can't hold on anymore, and he falls thousands of feet to the ground, along with the stone gargoyle.
The Joker and Harley kidnapped him and brain washed him as they wanted a child but Harley "didnt want to go through the joys of child birth" so they made him into a mini Joker :)
Believe it or not, Batman was the evil one in Joker's deranged mind, according to the graphic novel, Going Sane, where the main character is Joker for most of the comic.
He caused great chaos for the Dark Knight all over Gotham City to encounter as did the other villains.
