Three old cities were united: Pest, Buda and Óbuda (means Old Buda, that was built on the remains of Aquincum, the ancient Roman capital of province Pannonia Inferior).
Before their union, all three were independent cities. Since the Hungarian Reform Era (first half of the 19th century) we've used the name Pest-Buda (until they became one).
