Bulgaria was on the side of the Axis in World War II. Out of Finland, Germany (Austria Annexed to Germany), Hungary, Romania, Italy, and Japan, Bulgaria was the only country not to fight against the Russians. They controlled the north-eastern part of Greece and some southern parts of Yugoslavia. They feared the invasion of Turkey and kept many divisions near the south. They sided with the Axis but in 1944 when the USSR was making its way toward southern Europe they overthrew its government and placed a Puppet Regime for the short remainder of the war and fought with the USSR although never saw action after switching sides. The Puppet Regimes were also established in Romania, Hungary, and Vichy France.
