He was smart enough to keep the home folks informed of his victories in Gaul and wrote his commentaries not in the intellectual Greek, but in the common Latin so everyone could read them. He had the intelligence to weigh matters carefully before starting the civil war, as he knew what allies he had in Italy. He was aware of the discontent among the common people and had legislation proposed to alleviate some of the debt which was a big concern.
