There have been more then one character in the Marvel comic universe that have worn the Captain America costume. The original (and current) Captain America was Steve Rogers. Rogers was a soldier in the Second World War and in later life had a job as a comic book artist. Rogers has also taught history at high school. In recent issues of the comic book, he acted as Director of the SHIELD Agency, make him, effectively, America's top cop. In 2010 and 2011, Rogers was replaced as Captain America by his WWII sidekick, Bucky, whose real name was James Buchanan Barnes, who for many years had been an assassin for the Soviets. Other characters that filled in for Rogers, wearing the Captain America costume at the request of the US President, during the late 1940s through to the 1990s included John Walker, who eventually became the superhero U.S. Agent, Jeffry Mace, William Burnside, and William Naslund.
