The answer below is WRONG. He was not trying to prove that the world wasn't flat. This had all ready been known for thousands of years before 1492. The explorers like Columbus was looking for a water route to Asia for trade. If a water route was found the riches would be enormous. He accidentally bumped into the Bahamas.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian who was "sponsored" by the queen/king of Spain to set out on a voyage to find the Northwest Passage, a route that was believed to take you to the coast of Asia without dialing around Africa. He set out on this voyage with three ships, known today as the Niña, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. These ships departed on August, 3 1492 and made landfall at San Salvador on October 12. From there his voyage continued to explore the coast of Cuba, Hispanola, and current day Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where the Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas Day, and was forced to be abandoned. Columbus then left some men in a settlement they built, La Navidad, and sailed for Spain. There was a strong storm along the way and the caravan ended up landing in Portugal, Castillian Spain bitter enemy, but they were spared, and after spending a week in Portugal they returned "home" to Spain.
