The frame was constructed of wood, and it was wrapped with waterproof leather. The first submarine to be used in combat was the Turtle (also called the American Turtle). It was invented by David Bushnell and first used in 1775 against the HMS Eagle. It was never successful as a combat weapon. The first submarine to sink an enemy ship was the Confederat submarine H.
