When Hiram Ulysses Grant entered West Point he was enrolled under the name of Ulysses Simpson Grant. He had no desire to have his steamer trunk and other items marked with the initials HUG. He kept the name and later became known as unconditional surrender Grant or U S Grant.

'Unconditional Surrender' was a phrase he originated after the surrender of Fort Donelson. The public liked the way it chimed with 'U.S.', and it became his nickname.

Later, as President, he attracted a rather different nickname - 'Useless Ulysses'.
