George Washington, a Virginia delegate, was unanomously elected president of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He was among those favoring a strong central government. After the convention he promoted ratification of the Constitution in Virginia. However, documents discovered in 1987 from notes made from a Georgia delegate, Abraham Baldwin who was at the convention in 1789, noted that Washington told him privately that he did not expect the Constitution to last twenty years.(S.Menzel)
