he was a haberdasher then worked on his fathers farm
Harry S. Truman was a farmer, store owner, and a judge before he became president.
After graduating from Independence High School in 1901, Truman worked as a timekeeper on the Santa Fe Railroad, sleeping in "hobo camps" near the rail lines; he then worked at a series of clerical jobs. He returned to the Grandview farm in 1906 and stayed there until 1917 when he went into military service.
Truman worked at odd jobs after graduating from high school to help his family make ends meet. He helped on his father's farm from 1906 until he joined the military to fight in World War I. After the war he opened a hat shop which failed in 1922. Truman was made a "judge" of Jackson Co., Missouri, which was an administrative post. From 1926-34, he was the head judge of the county. From 1935-45, he served as a Democratic Senator representing Missouri. Then in 1945, he assumed the vice presidency.
Truman held several jobs before he got into politics. He was timekeeper fora railroad contractor for a year, a mail-room clerk for a newspaper for a year, a bookkeeper at a bank for two years, ran his father's farm for 11 years , spent two years in the army and was a partner in a haberdashery shop for about 3 years.
He was a county executive, called a presiding judge, for 12 years and was a US Senator when he was nominated as vice-president.
He was a United States Senator before he became Vice President and President,
One interesting story in history is how Truman opened a store that went bankrupt, taking him 15 years to pay off the debt. I assume it is true.
After he got out of the army, he ran his father's farm for a few year, Then he ran a haberdashery shop. Finally he worked as a judge.
He was vice-president immediately before he became President. Before he was VP, he was a US senator from Missouri.
