Due to it's location and size, Japan had to get most of it's industrial raw materials, such as iron ore and petroleum, from other countries. It's primary goal in WWII was to acquire enough land rich in raw materials to be independent from other countries. It's secondary goal was to gain enough territory to form an effective defensive perimeter that would prevent others from retaking the land they had acquired.
