He agonized over it, micro managed it and despised it. President Johnson wanted to end the war and that he "trying to win it just as fast as I can in every way that I know how" and later stated that he needed "all the help I can get." In the end he relised that he couldn't win the war and that is why he refused to run for a secont term.
Prior to Johnson being in office we had military advisors in Vietnam helping the South Vietnamese army defend their land against Communism. In 1965 after Johnson became President he gave the troops permission to fight back. To actively engage in battle against the North Vietnamese. He did so the evening before gaining Congress's support to engage in war.
He wanted to fight the war with "special" military men. He believed that WW2 type warfare (total war) was not the answer in the Atomic Age. He created the SEALS and GREEN BERET to fight those special wars.
Johnson remembered that many Republicans blamed the Truman administration for the fall of China to communism in 1949. So, Johnson was afraid that if he didn't prevent Another Country, Vietnam, from becoming Communist it would damage the view of his Democratic administration.
We must be excused for again urging the World, the Albany Argus and other Democratic organs, to the necessity of a prompt and vigorous support of President JOHNSON'S "policy of reconstruction."

I believe that was Lyndon B. Johnson. America's involvement in Vietnam was limited until he became president. According to Wikipedia, "It was Johnson who began America's direct involvement in the ground war in Vietnam." See the Related Links below for more information.
Johnson Huynh was born on January 23, 1981, in Saigon, Vietnam.
