Both were writers and revolutionaries. They became friends when Lorraine was viewing one of his plays. While others were critical of it, he says Lorraine defended the play. They became friends and would often gather at her Bleecher street and Waverly Place apartments. He states they were comrades in the struggle and he feels the strain of fighting for civil rights and racism played a part in her early death. Both were also said to have been homosexual, which played a role in their close friendship. In the Hansberry biography To Be Young, Gifted and Black, Baldwin writes his tribute to Hansberry.
