During his lifetime he was called (in Germany) "Der Rote Kampfflieger," which translates literally as "The Red Battle Flyer".

However, in English he's much better known as "The Red Baron," and even in Germany he's usually referred to today as "Der Rote Baron."

The title he actually used was Freiherr, but Freiherr (literally "Free Lord") and Baron are essentially equivalent (there have at times been technical differences in the two ranks, but they're both commonly translated into English as "Baron") and Freiherren are sometimes addressed as Baron even in Germany).

But at the first time the name "Red Baron" was used not until after the war. During the war he was known as Le pétit rouge or Le diable rouge.

You probably know Manfred von Richthofen by his more common name - The Red Baron. He was the top German ace of the First World War, claiming 80 combat kills before his strange death in 1918.

It could be argued that his death made him as famous as his life - he wasn't killed by a fatal crash, or the guns of an enemy pilot; no, he was killed by a .303 shell from a rifle on the ground. It penetrated his chest, making a mess of his heart. He managed to land his plane on a nearby airstrip. He died moments after the landing, uttering only one word: "Kaputt."

He was the most successful German fighter pilot in World War I and was also known by the nickname, The Red Baron. He was officially credited with 80 confirmed enemy aircraft shot down. This was the highest of all German and Allied pilots. For example, the highest scoring American ace was 26 (of course, the Americans did not fight in the war as long).
