Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States. Before that he was vice president under Andrew Jackson and before that Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson.

He was a lawyer as a career but had spent most of his life actively engaged in politics and held a number of offices, including Senator from New York.

Presidential: March 4, 1837 - March 4, 1841

Van Buren started out as a politician at a early age. He was 17 years old when he helped secure the nomination to congress for John Van Ness. That was his start as a career politician
