Paul became, without doubt, one of the greatest evangelists the world has ever seen. He went on to either found, or at the very least, encourage many churches across the Mediterranean area (most of the then-known world). He visited them on missionary journeys. He was party to other conversions across the area. He was the author of some of the most profound and encouraging letters that have ever been written - so much so that a great deal of the New Testament consists of letters that were written by him. Even in his prison before execution by the Romans Paul even converted, through the Holy Spirit, his jailers. All in all, Paul did more to spread the Christian message than any other disciple. Yet he was at one time a Pharisee who took a delight in persecuting Christians who, after his conversion did more than anyone else, despite his background, to promote the Christian faith. Who said that God moves in a mysterious way? well, with paul there seemed to be proof of this.
St. Paul used to persucute Christains. He was walking on a road and then suddnely he was blinded by God's light. God asked, "Saul, why do you persucute me?" (St. Paul's name used to be Saul before the conversion.) Then he basically became a follower of God. !
Yes he was. Saul (later to become Paul) receives his initial training at the local Greek university. Then, as is custom in devout Jewish families, his parents send him to Jerusalem to stay with relatives (Acts 23:16) and complete training in the orthodoxy traditions of Judaism, under the teaching of Gamaliel, the most respected teacher in the land. This training prepared Saul to become a member of the most zealous religious group in Judah, a Pharisee. His training, abilities, and zeal quickly elevate him, even as a young man of thirtyish, to a position of respect and authority in the Jewish council called the Sanhedrin. Saul then gained permission of the local Roman authorities to begin a ruthless campaign of stamping out the "heretics" who claimed Jesus as their Messiah.
Paul was Jewish as were all the disciple's and Jesus.
Paul was a tent maker by profession first then he was called Saul.
