In 1970 she was declared the first female Doctor of the Church. She preached widely and campaigned for peace between the states and principalities in Italy by traveling to Avignon France, the principal seat of pope Gregory XI. Catherine implored him to return to Rome, which he did. Soon after the Great Schism of Western Church was starting. Catherine supported the new Pope Urban VI by dictating letters and becoming Urban's trusted adviser. She did not live to see a united Roman Church.
