Cecilia is one of the most famous of the early Roman martyrs. It is perhaps possible that she was a real person, but the familiar stories about her are considered to be pious romances apparently not founded on authentic history. The traditional legend about Saint Cecilia's death says that after being struck three times on the neck with a sword, she lived for three days.

There is little reliable information about Cecilia. Legend tells us she was from a noble Roman family and had married a pagan. He converted to Christianity and with his wife started a ministry of providing a proper burial for other Catholics who had been cruelly martyred. This did not set well with Roman authorities who arrested and executed her husband. She continued the ministry and was also condemned to death. When suffocation failed to kill her a soldier was ordered to cut off her head. He was unable to do so with three strokes of the sword - the legal limit. They left her to die in her home, which she did three days later after distributing her wealth to the Church and the poor. She was proclaimed a saint by the early Christian community based on her life of service and her martyrdom. She died about 177 A.D. at Rome and her body was discovered incorrupt in 1599 and is known to be the first saint to be incorrupt.

Cecilia was a beautiful young lady and of a noble Roman family. She was married to a pagan who she converted to Christianity. Even though she was married she remained a virgin and her husband joined her in her ministry to the needy.

Cecilia was not a 'religious' in terms of being a nun. She lived her life as a Christian in the manner we are all called upon by Christ to live. She fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, shelter to the homeless, clothing to the naked and buried the dead. She had the calling from her earliest years to live a life in the manner we are called by Our Lord to live. In the end she gave her life for her beliefs.
