The Australian equivalent of the US cowboy is stockman, or ringer. On the large cattle stations - ranches in the USA - a cowboy was an older man whose job it was to care for and milk the house cow if they had one - in some places the goats - and to do other jobs around the station complex such as tending the garden, if the property did not have a full-time gardener. These positions have largely disappeared now as better transport and refrigeration have lessened the isolation of the large outback properties.
