Individuals did not attack castles, but armies and it was to take the land and power from the man who had them. Western Europe was made up of small sections controlled by nobles who owned their power to a king. These small parts would often change hands when another man wanted the land and power. The strongest won. It is that simple.

Enemies could do several things in attacking a castle. By surrounding it, allowing no one to pass, they could lay siege and starve the occupants into capitulating. A trebuchet (catapult) could send heavy stones over the walls to smash the buildings or people inside. Later, when gunpowder became available, cannons had the same effect. Also, battering rams were used to break down doors to castles. This consisted of a reinforced log hung from a frame that it could swing from, allowing repeated blows.
