If on the move they had to march up to 50 km a day carrying their armour, weapons, equipment and a stake for the pallisade of their camps. When they camped each night, they had to build a camp with a ditch, mound and pallisade, erect their tents (carried on mules or wagons), carry out domestic tasks helping cooks, armourers etc, and clean and repair their equipment and weapons. They also had to carry out sentry duties (automatic death penalty for sleeping on watch). There might be a couple of hours of daily rest in all that. They also had to forage daily for food, harvesting grain and fruit, rounding up and butchering cattle, winning and carrying water, fending off attackers while doing all this. And then sometimes they had regular battles to help fill in their day; if not there was always regular individual and collective training.

∙ 14y agoIt was extremely tough - lots of marching in armour, poor food but plenty of it, and always the chance of being a tenth man when every tenth was executed because of a legion's poor performance in battle. scary!!! Every soldier was expected to be able to march 22 miles in 5 hours. They had to do this while carying/wearing all of their eqiupment and belongings.

At the beginning of the city, a soldier fought only until the current campaign was ended and then the army, for the most part was disbanded and the men went back to their farms. During the early republic, men were enlisted, trained and kept for various periods of time. The enlistment times and pay changed over the years. Marius reformed the army and made it open to all citizens, lengthened the enlistment time and raised the pay. Augustus truly professionalized the army, lengthened the enlistment time and raised the pay. In all these phases of the army a soldier had to train twice a day, do guard duty, and care for his equipment. If he had special skills, he was given a job where they could be used. When not at war, the army was used for the construction or roads, bridges and aqueducts. It has been said that the Roman soldier did more digging than fighting.

They built the military forts and the fortifications along the foresters of the empire and they built roads, including the stone-paved roads. They also were subjected to military discipline.
