Saddam Hussein used the traditional tools of military leaders, including coercion, torture, repression, and assassination as he moved up in the leadership of the Ba'athist Party and in the government of Iraq.

The crimes for which he was executed were war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. These included the murders of Kuwaitis during the first Gulf War (1991), of Iraqi Kurds during the Anfal campaign (1988), and of suspects in a plot against him in 1982.
