That traits are inherited from the ancestors, but they may change.

The changes in the genome happen by pure chance, thus the organism either benefits from it, gets a drawback or nothing of the two.

Darwin now postulated, that the ones which got advantages from such changes in their genome, performed better at surviving/reproducing. So as generations passed, more and more organisms of the population inhereted that new trait.

At some point, the population may split and both halfs accumulate changes in their genome, until they are no longer compatible of reproducing with each other - in the words of Darwin: two species evolved from an ancestor.
