Girlfriends & wives. Soldiers have carried and still do carry pictures of anyone who they hold dear. Soldiers away from home, especially in combat situations need reminders of those they leave behind. Some soldiers anyway. Some soldiers do not carry anything that reminds them of home, especially those serving in special ops units.

If there are any Vietnam era Rangers still serving in the US Army today (the youngest could be no younger than 48), then, yes. Soldiers who have served in combat in companies who wore unit tabs such as those worn by Rangers are authorized to wear the tab on their left shoulder. In fact, those who do not may be considered out of uniform.

To simply have served in the country of South Vietnam while serving in the U.S. military services. Many joined the Army, so the initial service was three years. Others were drafted, and had to serve two years in the service. Draftees who came home after serving a year in Vietnam with only two or three months remaining on their 24 month service obligation were given 'early outs.' Others serving from '59 to '75 are considered Vietnam Era Veterans -- serving in the military during that time, but not actually assigned to units in Vietnam.

Jay Leno is certainly in the age group that served in the Vietnam War. He may have had a brother that served in Vietnam; if so, Jay was "relatively" safe from serving in Vietnam. Similiar to actor Chuck Norris, although Mr. Norris did serve in the USAF during those times; unfortunately his brother was KIA while serving with the 101st Abn (Ambl) in Vietnam in 1970.
