Life in New Spain was entirely dependent on who you were. There were peninsulares and the criollo children who lived rather well on large tracts of land. However, the vast majority of inhabitants were either African Slaves or overworked Native American tribesmen. In either case, these people owned little (in the case of slaves, nothing) and had to agonizing back-breaking work without ceasing.
