Family life in ancient Rome was pretty much like it is in the present day except the men were given more respect. Men and women had their own "roles" or spheres of responsibility and neither gender would think of infringing upon the other's. Basically, the father went out and earned the living with the mother staying home running the house. The children had their toys, games and school books. Of course this is just the loose basic outline of a Roman family, each one was different just as our modern families are different, but with the same basic pattern. Most Roman families were technically under the control of the eldest male who was called the paterfamilia, and he was the one who had to give permission for is adult sons to leave home and set up their own households. This permission was rarely denied.

Relatively quiet in the countryside. It could be extremely busy and fast paced in the cities. Slaves would work, mothers could look after their children and men would work.
