Football of the middle ages might be best described as anarchic; there were very few rules, and in some games not even the numbers of people on each side was regulated. Mob football was a form with no limit on the numbers of players.

Written rules for sports were a thing of the modern age, and in the Middle Ages standard rules did not exist. Football was played however people agreed to play it at the time, and it existed in many forms, most of which were rather chaotic. In one form, called mob football, there was no restriction even to the numbers of people who played on each side, and passersby could find themselves suddenly called on to play in the game.

Why was football called mob football in the middle ages?

There were different kinds of football played in the Middle Ages, and mob football was one of them. There was no set of rules, except as was agreed upon at the beginning of the game. In the case of mob football, the rules might have consisted merely of where the goals were, and the number of people playing on either side was not stipulate, so the sides could be whoever wished to join in, in whatever number they came.
