Childhood wasn't much fun. By the time a child was 7 or 8 years old they were working either with the parents in helping in the fields/learning a trade/skill or if they were a noble child learning the ways of nobility. A noble boy would start on his knighthood at this time and finish when he was 21. A noble girl was often contracted to a man for marriage and would go live with the soon to be in-laws to learn the ways of the family. A child by the time they were 12 or 13 was considered grown ( people only lived to about 25 so there wasn't as many years of life) and they were treated that way. Children were also often killed, abused, sold or given away. Babies could be left at a special gate of a monastery or nunnery and the child would never leave once they were taken in by the nuns or monks.
