What was it like to be shelled in World War 1?

Well, seeing as there is one World War One survivor left in America, I'll answer in his place. It was terrifying, horrible, there were bombs and explosions dropping all around you and you were frozen in fear, wondering if the next one was going to hit you, seeing your friends get blown to smithereens, and knowing that after this horrible bombardment, then a huge wave of troops would hit your trench.

It. was not. pleasant.
