Actually, jazz as a genre had not developed yet although all genres of popular music had their bases in the Louisiana-born Dixieland although while doing research for a book on popular music lyrics, I discovered that the first song referred to as "popular music" was "I'm Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage" composed by Harry von Tilden in 1905 (Sorry, my documentation died in a crash four computers ago.). In the '20s, ragtime--a cousin of Dixieland Jazz--was king.
