The cotton gin (or engine) was a major advance in mechanizing the process of manufacturing cotton cloth, thus making cotton cloth less expensive and more broadly useful. This also played a historic role in making possible the wealth and power of cotton plantations in the old south, prior to the Civil War.

The original cotton gin was a box with a center wheel with teeth and a handle. The cotton bolls was put into the gin and the wheel turned. As the teeth or brush grabbed hold of the cotton it tore it apart. The seeds would drop to the bottom of the box. Raw cotton is very dense so to get all of the seeds takes a few turns with the wheel.
