because railroads allowed people to travel large distances relatively quickly. this means that rather than it being OK to have a different time in each small town or city you needed standardised times or else every time you went from New Jersey to new york you'd have to adjust your watch by around ten minutes each way

well it helped the u.s because of transportation and many other ways. railroads were much easier to transport goods all around the world.
