Many were forced to work on ranches to earn what little money they could. This sort of work brought along with it a very lonely lifestyle. So, many American citizens' dream was to own their own land where they could be their own boss, settle down with their own family and land. No underpaid job to put them down. The novel "Of Mice and Men" is a great example of this.
