The Munich Agreement was the first the Allied country's mistaken approach of appeasement of Hitler. The countries agreed to allow Hitler to annex Czechoslovakia without having the Czechs involved in the agreement. The land the Nazis annexed contained a German speaking majority, so the Allies believed the annexation was justified.
It was a shameful incident for Democracy. Hitler, backed by Mussolini, demanded Germany's right to annex the Sudetenland; an ethnically German region of Czechoslovakia since 1806. Great Britain and France decided to appease Hitler by allowing it, lest he take the entire country without their allowance. No one from the Czech government was invited to Munich to take part in this agreement. After it was concluded, Germany annexed not only the Sudetenland, but all of Czechoslovakia while the world watched, and no country intervened on behalf of the Czechs.
It was meant to try to appease Hitler so that he did not continue attacking Europe. It ended up in a failure.
