The Australian gold rush was a period of time that began in 1851. It started with the discovery of payable gold at Ophir, neat Bathurst in New South Wales which was found by Edward Hargraves , then within a few months, the real gold rush started when gold was found first at Ballarat, Victoria, then nearby Bendigo shortly afterwards.

The gold rush lasted several decades, as gold was found in other areas, including Western Australia and Queensland. During this time, thousands and thousands of immigrants came to Australia to try their luck on the goldfields. The Chinese, in particular, came in droves. Many of them found gold and returned home with their new wealth, but many stayed and set up various businesses in the towns. The towns themselves experienced huge growth during that period, but some of them died off once the gold was worked out.

The Australian gold rush was, literally, the "rush for gold". It was triggered when Edward Hargraves discovered payable gold at Summerhill Creek, near Bathurst, in February 1851 and the government made the official announcement in May of that year.

When people overseas heard about this they came in droves from all around the world to strike it rich.

It was like a life and death situation, if you don't find gold you go back home poor, if you get gold you get rich.
