The South had very good leaders, but had a smaller population and therefore a smaller army. The South was also a mess under the leadership of Jefferson Davis, who could barely keep the Confederacy together. The CSA were just an alliance and so things were rarely enforced. The transportation was not good in the South, so getting things from place to place was hard.

Lack of these big Confederate advantages:

1. Some of the best officers of the US Army had resigned to join the Confederates.

2. Traditional advantage in cavalry - most young Southerners could ride and shoot

3. Officer class - the army was a more natural choice of career for sons of rural landowners than in the industrial North.

4. Rank-&-file - a more soldierlike breed, a generally aggressive kind of people

5. Home-ground advantage - most battles were on terrain unfamiliar to the enemy

6. Stronger war-mission - to defend the homeland against the invader.

7. Their President did not have to face an election in mid-war, as Lincoln did.

8. (At the beginning) Prospect of recognition and military aid from Britain and France.

The South as a region did not have the population, industrialization, or military capability of the North, which benefitted from 87 years of federal control. The manpower and arms of the Confederates were only able to compete on a tactical basis, and ultimately could not replenish their materiel. This was in part due to effective blockades by the Union navy, which stifled Southern trade.
