== The first time an American unit engaged German units in combat was in North Africa in 1942. The 175th Field Artillery Battalion of the 34th Infantry Division was loaned to support the British.

The first move was a US submarine attack on a Japanese Merchant ship

on 15 December 1941. The second was the arrival of the first US military

in England on 26 January 1942, and the first Japanese warship sunk by a

US Submarine takes third place the next day. The next three moves are

more significant, the Doolittle Raid of 18 April 1942 is a major propoganda

and morale event but only a minor military success. The Battle of Midway

sinks four Japanese carriers and is a Pacific War turning point. And finally,

the ground battle against Japan begins with the landing on Gualcanal on

7 August 1942.
